The kidneys effectively regulate the potassium balance in the body and its deficiency is relatively rare. Too much or too little potassium is due to a disturbance in this regulation or other loss of potassium. A lower level of potassium (hypokalaemia) is occasionally seen with certain diuretics (water tablets). As a result, more potassium is lost in the urine than usual. The same reaction also occurs in a ketogenic diet, which is also a diuretic.
