Milk thistle is a one- or two-year-old mycorrhizal plant. The plant is native to the Mediterranean region and is cultivated in many places in Europe. It has been used as a herb for thousands of years.
The seeds of milk thistle wort contain 4-6% silymarin, which consists of three flavonolignans; silybin, silycristine and silydianine.
The antioxidant and liver protective effect of silymarin has been extensively studied in recent years. Silymarin stimulates RNA polymerase and thus promotes protein synthesis in ribosomes. This leads to a better ability of the liver to regenerate. Silymarin is 10 times more potent antioxidant than vitamin E.
Milk thistle has a long history as an herbal plant and has been studied extensively scientifically. That is why the Finnish Association of Health Product Traders chose milk thistle as the herbal plant of 2017.
